Introduction
So in my obsessive quest, this is my synthesis of what seems likely scientifically but spiritually and archetypally: As usual, I went down the YouTube rabbit hole. Being a startup founder of a holistic AI therapy platform, I often find myself obsessively diving into mind-body approaches - occupational hazard, perhaps. Recently, I've been pondering the correlation between epigenetics and intergenerational patterns, sparked by a personal breakthrough. After breaking a significant intergenerational pattern, I started feeling substantially better and noticed my histamine levels dropping naturally. This was particularly striking because I used to exhibit the classic undermethylated profile: perfectionistic, high-strung, with an intense sense of productivity guilt that seemed hardwired into my system. The timing wasn't coincidental. As I addressed this inherited behavioral pattern - one that had clearly been passed down through generations - my biochemistry began shifting in measurable ways. When I learnt to relax deeply and surrender (well, kind of), I saw a massive health improvement overall - more alertness, less chronic fatigue, reduced bloating, easier weight loss and acne clearing up. I was able to trust the process of life, trust the universe rather than thinking that the universe was trying to attack me. I stopped villainising the external and instead took accountability for my life. Since this had such a drastic change - more so than any health tip I have tried over the last 2 decades - I tried to get to the bottom of the explanation. The explanation of course feels intuitive enough - self work, resting should help with health. But I also wanted to correlate epigenetics with certain spiritual concepts that I resonate with. I do think psychology and spirituality go hand in hand. And psychology would have a lot more depth if it were integrated with spiritual concepts.
Epigenetics is the mechanism through which karma becomes biology.
Trauma experienced by your ancestors reverberates through generations, not just emotionally but molecularly. But here’s the catch: healing also reverberates. When you break a pattern (addiction, shame, repression), your body records it, not just your mind. So your liberation rewrites lineage, not just your own life.
Your emotions are epigenetic signals.
Chronic fear, resentment, guilt? These tighten and silence certain genes. Joy, safety, purpose? These activate and repair gene expression. I believe in the near future, science will confirm: Belief systems are molecular signals. Affirmations are perhaps neurochemical scripts for gene activation. And so affirmations or mantra as you call them can help you in improving your gene expression and help you in shifting patterns which eventually could even change your destiny.
Childhood experiences are the deepest epigenetic programmers.
Especially before age 7 (root chakra years). Not because you inherit trauma, but because your environmental interface is raw and unfiltered. If you were made to feel unsafe, unseen, or unworthy as a child, certain genes that govern resilience, immunity, and nervous system regulation may have been downregulated. But with presence, re-parenting, and nervous system work and this can reverse.
There is an intuitive intelligence behind it
Not random. Epigenetic expression often aligns with soul contracts. For example: A healer may inherit autoimmune tendencies not as punishment, but as a direct pathway to their soul work. Someone meant to awaken a lineage might be born into dense trauma as a catalyst soul, with epigenetics both as burden and blueprint.
Nature + Nurture + Narrative
Your biology is shaped by: The genes you inherit (Nature) The environment you grow in (Nurture) The story you tell yourself about your life (Narrative) And that last one - Narrative, which may be the most epigenetically powerful of all. So I believe that if you shift your identity or your narrative - that alone can transform your gene expression and consequently your health significantly. For me, it was that If you look at others as a villain, you become the victim - which takes away your power to change or improve. When you are a victim, you are subconsciously punishing yourself to punish the other person, to make them feel guilty. But this serves no one - not you, not others. Instead what makes all the difference in the world is to forgive yourself and the other person. And that doesn’t have to mean you can’t hold them accountable any more or that you can’t hold yourself accountable to have a better life. It just means that you are now ready to change your narrative for a healthier, more empowered future.
